IDF Junior Command Preparatory School

The IDF Junior Command Preparatory School is a military-educational institution, where cadets study in grades 10-12. It was founded in 1953, following a joint initiative by David Ben-Gurion and Dr. Arthur Biram, as an institution aimed at combining academic and military education, and preparing youth for service as skilled commanders who will make up the cadre of I.D.F. combat officers. The course of preparation at this pre-military academy includes full academic studies on the campus of the Hebrew Reali School high school campus, Beit Biram, which adjoins the military boarding school. In addition, the students take an academic and practical course in Military and Defense Studies, as one of their majors.

Undertaking this unique major is compulsory for the IDF Junior Command Preparatory School pupils. The syllabus includes exercises and training of various types: physical fitness, advanced weaponry with an emphasis on shooting, navigation skills, battle simulations, field command, parachuting and even diving. The theoretic component comprises of subjects such as principles of war, battlefield doctrine, analysis of battles and wars, topography, Land of Israel studies, military technology, command and control doctrine, military leadership, military ethics, and others.

The enriched training course that the cadets undergo during their years of study at the IDF Junior Command Preparatory School includes numerous experiences parallel to the I.D.F. combat officers’ course.

In the 60 years of its existence, over 2500 have graduated from the IDF Junior Command Preparatory School. Most of them reached central and influential positions in the country’s government and military leadership and in the media.

Every year, beginning in November, registration for the next school year takes place. At the end of this process, the cadets who will join the IDF Junior Command Preparatory School are selected. Admission to the IDF Junior Command Preparatory School is open to both boys and girls who will combine a life of an I.D.F cadet with studies at the Reali School that include social activities and community engagement.
